One of the best things to a Washingtonian can do on a warm Winter's day is go to Olmstead Island. The trail is easy that Seniors can enjoy. My boy found the trail fun and easy. Series of bridges and boardwalks provide vistas of Island and Potomac River. Bridges traverse a unique floodplain granite terrace environment. There are even flowers unique to this gorge. At the end of the Olmstead Island Bride nature walk there is Great Falls overlook. Spectacular view of the Falls and the head of Mather Gorge. Handicap Accessible. Dogs are not permitted. (paved)

Get a sneak peek of United States Capitol Visitor Center before it opens December 02, 2008. Visitors must obtain free tickets for tours on a first-come, first-served basis at the Capitol Guide Service kiosk located along the curving sidewalk southwest of the Capitol (near the intersection of First Street, S.W., and Independence Avenue.) The Capitol Visitor Center is open to visitors from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Inauguration Day. Tours of the U.S. Capitol are conducted from 8:50 a.m. to 3:20 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Visitors with official business appointments may enter the Visitor Center as early as 7:15 a.m.

American History Museum Grand Reopening
The National Museum of American History officially reopened to the public on the morning of Friday, Nov. 21, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. A procession of historical characters brought history back to the museum, kicking off a three-day festival that celebrated the new home of the Star-Spangled Banner. View the first visitors welcomed to the dramatically transformed National Museum of American History.

Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture
On July 1 2006, the $283 million renovated Patent Office Building, home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery opened its doors to the public. The two museums and their activities are now known collectively as the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture. The Reynolds Center Grand Opening festival was alive with music, food and family activities. The Grand Opening Family Festival featured costumed characters from the collections, gallery tours, performances, free ice cream and live music on every floor of the building.

Hope Diamond and the National Gem Collection
They say a diamond is a girl's best friend. Imagine taking your date to the world's greatest collection of gems on display at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. More than 7,500 individual gemstones, ranging from less than a half-carat to almost 23,000 carats, fill the cases in in the Janet Annenberg Hooker Hall of Geology, Gems, and Minerals. Harry Winston's gift of the Hope Diamond inaugurated the stunning series of spectacular gifts that transformed the National Gem Collection from a fine to a truly fabulous one. The National Museum of Natural History is located at 10th Street & Constitution Avenue, and is open daily 10 am 5:30 pm. The closest Metro Station is the Smithsonian Station on the Blue and Orange line.
Russia House Valentines Dinner
The Russia House is one of the most intimate restaurants in Washington DC. This charming landmark was built in the 1890's. My Valentine and I dined in a classic Russian burgundy and gold decor dining room. Our white table was softly lit by a small candle flickering of romance. My date and I enjoyed a divinely sumptuous six-course Czar's dinner menu with premium vodka pairings. The sensual meal blended Russian and European cooking traditions. Unlimited champagne made this a night one to remember. Connoisseurs will find the Russia House has one of the best selections of caviar in the area. If you have a budget that allows such extravagances then this an experience not to be missed. Make sure to make your reservations at least a week in advance.

Washington DC Chinese New Year Parade
Each year a parade is held in Chinatown in Washington, DC to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The event features the traditional Chinese Dragon Dance, Kung Fu demonstrations and live musical entertainment. The Chinese New Year is a 15-day event that starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The first day of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festivity in the Chinese Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year is a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.
